NBC Sports Talk for Android is for die-hard sports fans. That’s because the news that users will get from this app is pretty niche and will only really have an impact on those who closely follow sports.

NBC Sports Talk brings you the latest news, rumors and analysis from NBC’s collection of sports blogs directly to your Android device. Whether you’re into football, baseball, basketball, hockey, college ball or golf, this app allows you to closely follow your favorite teams and athletes with up-to-date, to-the-point, news.

While I don’t closely follow any sports teams or athletes, I must say I was particularly impressed by NBC Sports Talk’s design. The app’s main menu is divided by sport, and all the stories are arranged beneath a color-coded header. Every news story is represented by a photo and headline in a listing of headlines that scroll sideways.

The app works seamlessly in landscape or portrait modes, stories load up quickly, you can slide to read the next post, and comments are easily accessed. When you return to the main grid of stories, those you’ve already read appear darkened, which is a nice touch and makes navigation easy.

When you launch the app, the entire screen is covered in thumbnail photos with a description of what you’re looking at. It’s a very effective way to organize a lot of data.

Another of the app’s perks is the ability to customize how you want your stories organized. In the top right corner of the screen, there’s a gray button, which allows you to choose whether or not you want to see all stories or just the top stories. This way, if you closely follow sports headlines, you’re able to filter out old news and stay on top of the latest headlines.

If you find an article of interest, there’s a button at the top of the screen that allows you to share your news with friends via Twitter, Facebook or email and there’s even a handy “copy link” tool that I wish was a feature that came standard with all of my news apps.

Because this layout seems to be an efficient way of organizing information, I almost wish there was a way for the network to include even more sports news (or maybe even allow the user to customize which sports, teams or athletes they’d like to read about), like, say women’s basketball or tennis.

If you’re looking for some good, acerbic sports analysis and commentary in short, easily-digested postings, all written by professional bloggers, NBC Sports Talk makes for a great download which performs nicely on Android-based tablets.
