Hyper Jump for your Android phone might not be the first game of its kind, but it is, in my opinion, the most memorable. The premise is similar to other platform jump-styled games: Keep climbing higher, and don’t fall to your doom.
Click Start, and your bug-like character will be launched into a patch of sky that’s littered with coins, various different kinds of power-ups and enemies. Tilt your phone from side to side to collect the coins, which are designed to boost you further into the air. The larger the coin, the bigger the boost. The gold coins are stationary, and are worth a point toward your score. (Your total score is based on coins collected and how many feet you’ve climbed.) The red coins are slightly more difficult to grab, since they move around. If you don’t consistently collect these coins, you’ll fall to your death. Keep in mind that once you have collected a coin, it will disappear.
After you grow used to the concept of collecting coins, you’ll want to keep your eyes open for power-ups, which are buried in coin groupings throughout the game. There’s a superman logo (which will rocket you upward, and make you a magnet for all of the coins in the area) and a feather and bubble, both of which will help you fight the laws of gravity. Collide with a question mark, and you’ll randomly be assigned a power-up.
Be careful, though. There are also obstacles to be encountered along the way. An anchor, disguised as a power-up, will make you heavy and difficult to move, and two fish-like enemies will try to knock you down.
Hyper Jump’s background is multilayered, which makes it look almost like a pop-up book. The music only contributes to the child-like aesthetic, which is a huge part of why this game is so fun.
This might be a more quickly paced platform jumping game than you’re used to, but don’t be surprised if you become instantly addicted. If you want to make the game even more interesting, you can install and launch the free “Hyper Jump Resources Pack” to unlock more characters and settings. As far as jumping games are concerned, this is a very fun game, and one that is certainly worth the $2.
