Android App Video Review: Third Blade

Video Review

Third Blade is a side scrolling action RPG from Com2Us, who also gave us the Inotia series of RPGs. The combat is fast and fun, though it can feel rather unfair at times. If you aren’t careful, the game turns into a level grinding festival.

In the game, you play as a guy; I’m not sure what his name is so let’s just call him Shirtless Wonder, who is travelling with his companion. His companion gets eaten/kidnapped, and Shirtless springs to save her. The title is a reference to the three kinds of blades you use in combat, even though it’s technically four blades. The first is a set of twin daggers, followed by a katana, followed by a massive sword in the vein of the Buster Sword from Final Fantasy VII.

You basically just select your dungeon/combat stage from the map and drop into the fray. Combat is fun and feels satisfying. The twin daggers felt useless in most situations, so I just stuck with the two bigger swords. As you make your way from room to room via portal, you eventually come to boss monsters. The boss fights were surprisingly challenging. If you die at all, you can use a Rune to revive. Runes are also used to buy new skills, and as far as I can tell, there is no way to get them without buying them in-app or by downloading other apps. After each level you can use your accumulated funds to buy new weapons, armor, and skills.

The game has pretty good art, music, and is fast-paced fun. If you run out of Runes from dying, you might end up grinding levels and money on earlier levels just to continue, and it can be annoying. Still, the game is pretty well made, and it’s completely free. I kind of wish there was a paid version though; because the advertisements in this game are honestly the most obnoxious I’ve ever seen, with full video ads interrupting your game. When you try to close the videos, you end up restarting them, it’s a big nightmare. Either way, check it out. Download the free Appolicious Android app
