Android App Video Review: Legendary Heroes

Legendary Heroes is a fun new action RTS game from developer Maya. It’s mobile gaming’s very own version of League of Legends or DoTA, heavily inspired by those games. It features nice art and sound and the production values are great, but the gameplay is a mixed bag. It can feel very tactical and fun, yet it can also drag on at a snail’s pace and bore you.

In each match, you switch between three hero characters on the battlefield. Your goal is to push to the enemy encampment in order to destroy their base. Each side will spawn AI controlled minions, and the routes are lined with powerful defense towers which must be overcome. Each hero has four different abilities with their own cooldown timers, and each is useful in their own way. The Paladin character is strong, yet also great at healing and buffing allies, while the Ravager is just a straight up powerhouse, raining down blows and dealing some real damage. You only have four hero characters to choose from at first, and the rest must be purchased with crystals and gold, the in-game currency you are rewarded with for playing well.

Each mission in the campaign will have several sub-mission objectives, and if you complete them all, you’ll be rewarded handsomely. Unfortunately, at least in the normal game progression, accomplishing these tasks is a feat in itself. You can use gold and crystals to purchase new characters or consumable items that give you a stat boost. There are five unlockable characters at this moment, one of which was not in the original iOS release, so you can expect more to come in future updates. Characters, currency, and ad removal can all be purchased in-app. The diverse characters are nice and there are some sweet tactics that you can employ, but the game is kind of a big mess. Your AI partners are terrible and it’s very hard to coordinate any kind of assault, and the movement speeds make the game feel slow and boring when you’re not in combat.

The simple graphics are colorful, the music sets the tone perfectly, and this game really has a lot going for it. On top of all that, it’s completely free. Unfortunately, the pacing and difficulty will probably turn a lot of people off of this game. If you don’t mind the issues I’ve mentioned, then this is definitely the game for you. It won’t replace your favorite Action RTS game, but it’s a great diversion to feed your addiction when you’re out and about, and there’s no harm in giving it a try.
