The Nexus devices of Google were extremely popular among people who wanted to experience Android in its purest form. However, Google has now decided to rebrand its Nexus lineup by manufacturing smartphones at an in-house facility. The first ever smartphone by Google, Google Pixel which is already released to the market comes with features that is able to rival the iPhone, its biggest competitor.

The development team at Google has delivered a gorgeous design to mobile phones with the new Pixel. It can be considered as a combination of designs that are familiar to many from HTC, Samsung, and even Apple mobile devices. The front panel of this smartphone is made entirely of strengthened 2.5D corning Gorilla Glass 4 which is meant to be extremely durable against everyday scratches that may occur. All of the navigation options can be found on the screen screen such as home, back, and tabs view. On the rear side of Google Pixel, users will be able to see only a single metal frame, however, the back is comprised of two parts which has a glass portion on top along with the camera and a fingerprint scanner on the back as opposed to the front as seen with Apple products.

Similar to the newest iPhone however, the Google Pixel comes with two variations as the Google Pixel and Google Pixel XL. Both of these smartphones have identical specifications except for the battery capacity, resolution, and screen size. The larger Google Pixel XL has a larger battery life, screen size, and greater resolution. The XL comes along with a 5.5 inch screen which has a resolution of 1440×2560 pixels while the Pixel has a 5 inch screen with a resolution of 1080×1920 pixels. Both these devices are equipped with Cat 12 LTE technology meaning it can offer impressive download and upload speeds. The other connectivity features that can be found with the Google Pixel includes Bluetooth 4.2, Wi-Fi 802.11ac, NFC, and GPS. A USB Type C connector can be found at the bottom of the device, enabling USB 3.0 speeds.  Both versions are powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 SOC processor which houses two 2.15 GHz cores and two 1.6 GHz cores. With a 4GB RAM, the phones also come with internal storage of either 32GB or 128GB for those who store a large amount of data on their mobile device.

In terms of software, the Google Pixel comes with the latest Android 7 Nougat operating system. This version of Android is said to have the best AI assistant program, Google Assistance, which is the flagship software feature that helps users get things done throughout the day. Upon saying “OK Google”, the system allows users to carry out several tasks including asking questions, opening apps, and doing routine jobs such as setting alarms or making notes. Even more conversational than Apple’s Siri, Google Assistance is able to remember previously said topics in order to have a more fluid conversation as opposed to having to structure entire sentences from scratch.

As a phone that claims to have “the best camera on any mobile device”, the quality of the Google Pixel camera has also received a lot of attention from amateur and professional photographers alike. The phone comes with a 12.3MP rear camera, which is equipped with 1.55µm pixels. On the front side, users can also find an 8MP camera. Despite other high resolution cameras that are on competing devices such as the iPhone 7, the Google Pixel camera surpasses it in critical performance areas such as loading quickly, focusing quickly, and shooting without delay. Video stabilization, 4K video recording, panorama mode, and various photo viewing modes make the camera of the phone one of the best that is available on the market.

The Google Pixel 32GB is marked at $649 USD, whereas the Google Pixel XL 32GB is marked at $769 USD. As one of the highest performing phones on the market, the price reflects the capability performances as it is on par with other rival phones available on the market.  With its unique design of material mixing on the back of the phone coupled with the superior software, the Google Pixel is a refreshing update to the previous Nexus devices that is likely to help Google compete with Apple.
