At its most basic, Whrrl is a lot like the popular application FourSquare. But, the key difference between the two is that Whrrl does more than just share with people where you are. It also helps you to tell stories about the places you have been.
Whrrl treats all of your posts like news updates and uses your phone’s GPS to track where you are. If you are with a group of people, you and a friend can collaborate and make posts together. Each story has its own URL so it can be shared beyond Whrrl, and can even be edited by all members of the group on the Whrrl website.
This application also has the option of including photos and notes, which can be shared with friends and followers on Facebook and Twitter. In a way, it serves almost like a scrapbook or a journal that documents all of the adventures you have in a day. You can even adjust your privacy settings with every single post so that you can distinguish between which entries your best friends can see, and those that you’re comfortable with your boss seeing.
You’ll also be able to see a global view of what’s happening in your network, view your friends’ latest updates on a map and add comments to their stories. Because this is a social networking app that’s based on actually going out and trying new things, you earn benefits the more you explore. The more places you check into, the more points you receive. After you have received a number of these points, you will be invited into Whrrl societies of like-minded people. You can even level-up in these societies, which will earn you exclusive offers, recommendations and give you special privileges.
Perhaps my favorite feature of the app are the suggested nearby locations. These are local restaurants, stores, parks, etc., that other uses have visited and recommended. I was able to take away a lot of great ideas for things to do.
Because the app has a very sleek design (it actually looks a little bit like the Twitter platform), you won’t have an issue figuring it out. This is both a fun and practical app that is very easy to use.
