New Android apps worth downloading: Readmill – ebook reader, Circa News, Sir! I’d Like to Report a Bug!

Oct 7, 2013

We’ve got a couple of apps that will make readers happy to start this week. First is e-reader Readmill, an app designed to make reading ebooks easier on your smartphone’s small screen. The second is Circa News, which also looks to make the reading experience better on small screens, but this time for news stories. Finally, we’ve got Sir! I’d Like to Report a Bug!, a platformer with classic 8-bit graphics and difficulty to match.

Readmill – ebook reader (Free)

What’s it about? E-reader app Readmill looks to create an elegant, simple interface and presentation so you can easily read books on your phone.

What’s cool? Readmill is an e-reader that’s focused on simplicity. The app is designed for reading ebooks on your phone, and brings with it an interface and design that throws out anything that could get in the way of you enjoying your book. It packs brightness controls and a nighttime reading setting, but for the most part, it keeps the frills out of the way. What Readmill does provide are stats that show you how fast you read and how much time you’ll need to finish your book, and a few social networking elements that let you review books and see what other people in the Readmill community think of others. You can also import DRM-free e-pub files, and Readmill syncs everything you add to it across multiple devices.

Who’s it for? Readers looking for an e-reader that keeps things simple should check out Readmill.

What’s it like? Amazon’s Kindle app is another highly useful e-reader, as is Nook from Barnes & Noble.

Circa News (Free)

What’s it about? Focusing on making news work better for reading on smartphones, Circa News condenses stories to make them easier to read on the go.

What’s cool? Circa News is all about reading news stories on a small screen, which is inherently impractical, especially with lengthy articles. Rather than try to cram all that content on a device’s small screen, Circa News condenses the stories themselves to make them easier to consume. The app also sends push notifications in order to help you stay up on the particular stories you want to read, rather than forcing you to keep rereading articles as they’re updated to track a developing story. You can also share the news stories you are most interested in with others across social networks and email.

Who’s it for? News junkies who need to stay informed but can’t handle large articles on small screens should try Circa News.

What’s it like? Other solid news delivery systems are Flipboard and Pulse News.

Sir! I’d Like to Report a Bug! (Free)

What’s it about? Sir! I’d Like to Report a Bug! is a 2-D platformer with 8-bit graphics and an emphasis on a classic feel and difficulty.

What’s cool? A new technology has gone haywire and caused computer bugs to be released into the world in Sir! I’d Like to Report a Bug!. As a computer quality assurance tester, you’re the only one who can save the world as it continually is messed up by glitches. Sir! channels old-school 2-D platformers by amping up its difficulty and challenge and utilizing a chiptune soundtrack, as well as by making lots of jokes and references that classic gaming fans will recognize.
