New Android apps worth downloading: Foursquare and Orbitz updates, Dragon & Shoemaker

Sep 4, 2013

Cruise around your neighborhood, or travel to far-flung places, with today’s first two apps worth downloading. First is location-based check-in app Foursquare, which lets users find businesses near them, collect on discounts, and track where businesses their friends use and like. Up next is Orbitz, which is newly relaunched and allows users to book travel accommodations from their smartphones or tablets. Finally, Dragon & Shoemaker is a side-scrolling platformer that’s based on Polish legend and tasks players with seeking to become a hero and stop a dragon.

Foursquare update (Free)

What’s it about? Use location app Foursquare to “check in” when you visit businesses to earn discounts, share your favorite locations with friends, and more.

What’s cool? Foursquare is one of those apps that lets users tell others where they are by “checking in” using the app’s GPS capabilities. Checking into businesses lets others see where you are and what you’re doing, and can also earn you discounts at certain businesses, especially if you check in enough times. You can also earn badges as you frequent different businesses at different times, and use Foursquare to meet up with friends by seeing when they’re nearby. You can also get directions, make reservations, and leave tips on the places you go that can be useful to other users. With Foursquare’s latest update comes a number of performance improvements, like faster processing and squashed bugs.

Who’s it for? If you’re a social networking fan who likes to see others’ recommendations and share your own, check out Foursquare.

What’s it like? You can also check in to locations with Facebook, and share your location with GPS Share.

Orbitz (Free)

What’s it about? Newly relaunched Orbitz is useful for booking travel accommodations, and has been updated with lots of performance and ease-of-use improvements.

What’s cool? Organizing all the things you need to travel can be a pain, from booking airfare to reserving hotel rooms. Orbitz streamlines that whole process, making it possible for users to compare prices, book airfare, rental cars and hotel rooms, and find great deals on various accommodations. The app also lets you see information about hotels, and allows users to view travel itineraries, as well. With Orbtiz’s relaunch comes a redesign that makes the app work better on tablets and smartphones, and which also ties into Google Now.

Who’s it for? If you find yourself traveling a lot, take some of the hassle out of the process with Orbitz.

What’s it like? Track down more great hotels and flights with Hipmunk and TripAdvisor.

Dragon & Shoemaker ($0.99)

What’s it about? Guide Shoemaker through side-scrolling levels in Dragon & Shoemaker, a platformer based on a Polish legend.

What’s cool? There’s a dragon on the loose in Dragon & Shoemaker, and as the latter, it’s your job to stop it. Dragon & Shoemaker puts players in the role of Shoemaker, a young boy from Polish legend who sets out to become the heroic Dragon Slayer. As players work through the platformer, collecting coins along the way, they’ll have to fight monsters and avoid obstacles in order to get to the end of the story and defeat the dragon. Dragon & Shoemaker includes 60 levels, and hand-drawn fantasy graphics to help players get lost in its world.
