We’re starting the week off with an update to Flipboard to lead today’s fresh apps, which adds The New York Times to the news app’s available feeds and publications. We’ve also got some great games for you to play this week: first, there’s AVP: Evolution, an Aliens vs. Predator title in which you can play as both killer creatures; second, we have Toy Story: Smash It!, an Angry Birds-like game based on the movies of the same name.
Flipboard update (Free)
What’s it about? News app Flipboard gives you a beautiful way to organize the stories you want to read from RSS feeds, social networks and other sources, presenting stories in a magazine-like format that’s elegant to navigate.
What’s cool? One of the most well-loved apps in the App Store is Flipboard because it’s a fairly gorgeous way to consume content from a variety of sources. The app takes feeds from different sources and presents them in modules with a heavily image-focused design. Flipboard makes reading, searching through articles and navigating your feeds quick and easy. The app’s new update adds The New York Times newspaper to the available feeds, with Top News available to all readers and subscribers receiving the full newspaper through Flipboard.
Who’s it for? If you find yourself reading a lot of articles and news content, you might want to do it with Flipboard.
What’s it like? Other great news apps include Pulse News and Google Currents.
AVP: Evolution ($4.99)
What’s it about? AVP: Evolution lets players fight the war between the xenomorphs of Aliens and the titular creatures of Predator in a futuristic setting that puts players in Fox’s film franchises.
What’s cool? Fans of Aliens and Predator will recognize the many sounds and visuals used in AVP: Evolution, which really bring a lot of the feel of the film franchises to the games. Players venture through two parallel single-player campaigns during the course of the game – one as the predators, one as the aliens – and get to take on the unique properties of each creature as they fight through various levels. Taking out Marines and other bad guys earns you points to buy upgrades for your creatures, so you can increase your lethality throughout the course of the game as well.
Who’s it for? Fans of Aliens and Predator, as well as other AVP video games will enjoy AVP: Evolution, but it’s not a game for kids.
Toy Story: Smash It! ($0.99)
What’s it about? The toys from Toy Story are back and in this puzzle title, in which players have to help Buzz Lightyear knock down structures made out of blocks.
What’s cool? Taking a page from the Angry Birds formula, Toy Story: Smash It! has players taking on the role of Buzz Lightyear and throwing bouncy balls and other implements to knock down structures made out of blocks. Each level challenges you to take out the structures in as few shots as possible, and you’ll get several different toys with which to do the job, including explosives. Smash It! includes 60 different levels to challenge you, with players working for the most efficient solutions to each puzzle.
Who’s it for? If you like Toy Story or games similar to Angry Birds, try Toy Story: Smash It!
What’s it like? Check out other Disney games, such as Wreck-It Ralph, and Siege Hero for a game with similar mechanics.
