I have a terrible sense of direction, and perversely, the grid nature of New York disorients me more rather than less. Here are some of the apps I use to get around with minimal confusion.
Self-explanatory– get anywhere, find anything, on foot, by car, or on public transit.
HopStop Transit Directions Map
Find the best and most efficient public transit route from where you are to your destination. Slightly more awkward than Google Maps, it requires you enter which borough you are in and traveling to, but it gives you the option of preselecting your travel time and date to adjust for service changes and deciding which combination of bus, subway, and foot travel you prefer in your desired route.
NYC Bus & Subway Maps
What it says on the tin– and more importantly, it works offline if you pre-download the maps, so you can use them when you’re lost on the subway and not connected to the internet.
Simple, but when you’re standing on a street corner disoriented, it can be a huge help to figure out which way is uptown.
Find the best corner to catch a cab at. Hey, it’s harder than it looks!
