Android games succeed in 2010

Dec 29, 2010

It was only a couple of months ago when Google (GOOG) revealed its Android Market had reached 100,000 apps available for download. And things aren’t slowing down a bit. Just over 100 Android apps are being downloaded every second, with 2.5 billion apps having been downloaded to date. The Android Market has reportedly doubled since Google’s last account, soaring past 200,000 apps in the past two months.

A good portion of those apps are games, which is still a top-performing category for the Android Market. The rapid uptake of Android has led to several milestones for the mobile platform’s gaming potential, which we reflect on in the cumulative review of Android’s best games of 2010.

The future of Android games

Looking forward, Android’s success is opening doors for gaming verticals including the anime genre. A couple of titles to look out for in early 2011 include ilomilo and Samurai II: Vengeance by Madfinger Games. Already popular on the iPhone, Samurai II will be the latest in a long string of game apps to cross over to Android’s platform, having proven itself on iOS.

Another successful testing ground for Android games has been GetJar’s platform, which provides full access for a variety of games, free of charge. Millionaire City is one of the latest games to become exclusively available on GetJar. Similar in concept to Sim City, you can easily spend hours building up your landscape and its faithful residents.
